A young man is seen on an avenue lightly dressed and shivering with a suitcase by a police officer. Patrolman Dowd is suspicious of the man and when he confronts him the man flees the scene and a shoot-out ensues. Dowd is hurt but not critical. Later the assailant is located in a hospital with a gunshot wound.

The suitcase contained contents from a house that had been burglarised  on 79th street. The assailant, Jack Wygan has previous convictions but his young wife of three months had no idea that he had ever been in any trouble.
