At 8am sharp, Lieutenant Gorman the Desk Sergeant at 21st Precinct, sounded the bell, and the 66 men who would patrol the precinct on foot and in sector cars marched out of the back room on the command of the patrol sergeant. The platoon halted, faced the desk, received their instructions and marched out of the front doors. Among the men, was Joseph A Hearne, 27 years old, who had been on the job for four years. Today he had been assigned school crossing duty, which he duly carried out until 9am. He was just about to leave for his regular post when he saw a car driving the wrong way on a one way street, so he decided to follow them in his patrol car...
