Veterans Day

Veterans Day

The 11th November, is observed annually across the world to honor military veterans, who have served in the armed forces.

The date is in recognition of the hostilities of the First World War formally ending, with the German signing of the Armistice coming into effect at the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month of 1918 (Paris time).

The anniversary is always marked with special remembrance programs, and as well as the ones on television, there are also many radio shows on RUSC. One I have included on RUSC this year is Wings To Victory. Presented by the  Army Air Forces, each thirty minute story is a dramatization of America heroism based on combat reports from the fighting fronts. The names of the characters in these true stories are fictitious but the skill to which they have been trained, the strength of their will and their purpose, all these are very real. I will be adding more of these throughout the week.

If you like to listen to a little music and variety, there's a series called Sound Off. It features favorites such as Tommy Dorsey and Glen Miller and ran from 1946 - 1948. It was sponsored by the US Army as part of its recruiting program. They are remarkably good quality for almost 80 years old! And of course there's great music and variety from Command Performance, a series that was created especially for the USA Armed Forces

We also have the World at War Radio Station here on RUSC. You can listen to the radio station by clicking on the link below, or by clicking on the RUSC Radio menu option to the left.

Listen here: World at War Radio Station

It's a poignant selection of old time radio shows to remind us of the courage and bravery of the fighting men and women who have served in the conflicts of the past century.

If there's a particular show that has touched your heart in the past and you feel should be included in the radio station, please let me know by posting a comment below, and I'll make sure that it's added.

Instead of our usual question and answers quiz, for your enjoyment I have compiled a Word Search. All the Veterans Day clues are hidden away in a grid of letters. To help you out I've included a list of all the words that are hidden away. Just click on the link here or on the It's Quiz Time in the column to the left.

As we contemplate today let us remember that Veterans Day is a time to honor all our brave men who have lost their lives in war and is commemorated as a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace.

Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris
