Presidents' Day

Presidents' Day

On the date set aside to celebrate all past presidents of the United States of America, I came across an episode of the Cavalcade of America entitled, The Man Who Wouldn't Be President.

It is the story of Daniel Webster, who was perhaps the greatest speaker America has ever produced.

He is regarded as one of the greatest orators of all times and mighty champion of the constitution those years when the nation was threatening to split asunder.

Daniel Webster was a leader of the Whig Party - a group that opposed President Andrew Jackson and the Democrats - and he ran for the US presidency himself in 1836, but was unsuccessful. Four years later, he was named Secretary of State by President William Henry Harrison, and again by President Millard Fillmore, where he earned a reputation as one of the greatest ever to hold the office.

Daniel Webster was instrumental in creating the peace treaty in 1842 between Great Britain and America, and preserving the future of Americans. He was a great American who sacrificed his chances of ever becoming president of the United States for something far greater as told in the story brought to you by Cavalcade, which is a stirring account of history, and is really worth a listen.

In addition to The Man Who Wouldn't Be President, to help you celebrate, you'll find a page loaded with a wonderful selection of topical old time radio shows.

Some are of historical interest and some are classic good fun. When you've listened to Chester Riley's, Gracie Allen's, Fibber McGee's and Jimmy Durante's political campaigning, be sure to cast your vote for President in our mini poll opposite!

Happy listening my friends,
