Lux Presents All About Eve

Lux Presents All About Eve

A couple of weeks ago you may remember I added to RUSC the Radio City Playhouse story The Wisdom of Eve. Since then I received this e-mail from dedicated RUSC member Betty, who said,

Looking at your description, I recognized the characters and story as being the same as "All About Eve," the classic Bette Davis film. I did a little research and found that the film came out in 1950. The Radio City Playhouse show aired in January 1949. Sure enough, "All About Eve" was written by the great screenwriter and director Joseph L. Mankewicz but the credits indicate it was based on "The Wisdom of Eve" by Mary Orr.  So what you've got there is a little gem "All About Eve" before it was ever a movie. A nice treat!

Twentieth Century Fox turned it in to the award-winning picture of 1950. All About Eve received 14 academy award nominations and won six Oscars including best picture. In 1951 Lux Radio Theater with William Keighley as producer broadcast their wonderful version of All About Eve with the unforgettable performances of Bette Davis, Ann Baxter, and Gary Merrill in their original screen roles along with Reginald Gardner as the malicious critic. I have added this to RUSC today for you to enjoy. Another nice treat!

Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris
