Happy Grandparents' Day!

Happy Grandparents' Day!

A long, long time ago, when I was a young boy, I thought that my grandparents were absolutely ancient.

Really!

Even looking back now, I can still picture my Grandpa sat in his big overstuffed chair, never really moving for the whole of the time that we were there visiting - which always seemed like hours!

Maybe it's because I'm a little older now, but my opinion is that things have changed massively since those days.

In fact, I can quite confidently say that never before have we had a generation of such 'life loving' older people, than right now.

Today's sassy seniors know how to love themselves. They're hitting the gym and embracing email, the internet, smartphones and extreme sports like never before - and it is fantastic!

On the other end of the scale, the young ones are beginning to appreciate how good us oldies had it when we were younger - so there's been a wonderful meeting in the middle, bridging that divide and bringing families even closer.

It's something that Marian McQuade, the founder of National Grandparent's Day, must have been so happy to see before she passed away in 2008.

As Grandparents' Day wasn't introduced until the late 1970s, there are no old time radio shows relating to this special day. However, there was one show which popped into my mind. It's one of my all time favorite radio shows, called You Can't Take It With You, and is about a young couple in love, and their very different families.

There are two versions of You Can't Take It With You on RUSC, from Theater Guild on the Air, and Lux Radio Theater. Both of them are fabulous productions, so I hope you'll be able to find a moment to listen.

Over the weekend, give a thought to the folks in your own neighborhood, who maybe aren't fortunate enough to have family nearby. Perhaps there's someone who might appreciate a little company for half an hour, a helping hand in their home, or maybe you could even burn to CD a selection of old time radio shows from RUSC for them to listen to. You could make their day, month or even their whole year!

And remember, age is nothing but a number, and the best tunes are played on the oldest of fiddles. Enjoy!

Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris
