Florence Nightingale

Florence Nightingale

Today, 12th May 2020, marks 200 years since the birth of Florence Nightingale. It's also International Nurses Week.

Florence Nightingale was born in 1820 in Florence, Italy, while her parents, like so many other well-to-do English people at that time, were touring Europe.

Against the wishes of her family, she was determined to become a nurse, desiring to make the world a better place for mankind.

There are two shows on RUSC about her life. Family Theater broadcast a wonderful biography in September 1950, narrated by Robert Ryan, with Jane Wyatt playing the leading role of the famous nurse.

In the Favorite Story biography of her life, she takes 38 nurses to Crimea to assist in the care of the wounded and give hope to the brave wounded soldiers who without her would probably never have lived to see British soil again.

She was known affectionately as the lady with the lamp, and her drive and courage was a powerful force in building the great profession of nursing - and was perhaps, the greatest hero of the Crimean War. You can listen to the show The Lady With The Lamp here on RUSC.

Happy listening my friends,
