A Vacation to Venus

A Vacation to Venus

In years to come, we will likely look back on 2020 with a plethora of mixed emotions. First, the Covid-19 virus threw the world into a state of fear and anxiety... And then something terrifying happened!

As an old time radio enthusiast, you will have likely heard some of the old classics being broadcast in a regular slot on radio stations across the country. However, Joy and I were dismayed recently, to hear that one of the stations we listen to had pulled their broadcasting of old time radio.

Then in the last few days, another of our friends of RUSC commented that another station - NPR/PBS this time - have also cut their 30 year long successful run of OTR broadcasts hosted in a weekly format, with their reasoning cited as “cultural sensitivities to language and themes in 60+ year old programming."

It's such a shame that the radio stations are taking this stance, canceling their broadcasts for the sake of political correctness. It seems the world has gone mad, when quite honestly, being able to escape into a bygone era through old time radio shows seems the only sane thing to do right now!

Old time radio records a time in history, a time that happened. That’s how it was. Simply not playing the shows because they don’t live up to today’s perceived PC, well we might as well cancel all great literature while we’re at it too.

Perhaps all of the current events in the world are why so many of you voted for a Vacation on Venus with Space Cadet Tom Corbett in the latest RUSC poll! Are we all ready to pack our bags and start life again on a different planet?

I want to reassure you that RUSC for one, will continue to broadcast all old time radio shows - the good, the bad, the ugly - and even the ones which sometimes make us cringe a little.

Keep listening my friends,

Ned Norris
