A strange and demoralizing rumor began to circulate throughout the territory surrounding the town of Spanish Flatts. It was a rumor that spread with the speed of wildfire, that "The Lone Ranger is dead, and it was the crooks hiding out near the Rio Grande who killed him!" Panic ensued, for if the outlaws could kill the Lone Ranger, then what chance did the normal citizens stand against them.
