It’s a terrible puzzling thing for Chris, the events on shipboard, the discovery that someone, a stranger, was posing as Frank Ashcroft the man he murdered.

Chris had murdered Frank Ashcroft and set it up to look like suicide so he and Linda Ashcroft would be free to be together. However when he went to discover the body with a shipmate the body had gone and a complete stranger was posing as Ashcroft. The shipmate and the captain both made out that the stranger was Ashcroft. It was a horrible twist of circumstances in the aftermath of his perfectly-planned murder.
