Beside a stream that cut down from the mountains, Jed Baker and his wife Deborah crouched with their feet close to the water. While Jed methodically scooped gravel from the bottom of the stream into a flat pan and swished it carefully, his wife just as methodically rubbed gravel into the clothes she was washing. Jed paid no attention until a buckskin shirt slapped into the water.
