Edward Vanderman who has trod the board all over Europe and played Hamlet has arrived in Dodge hungry and broke. When he’s caught cheating at cards Marshall Matt Dillon orders him out of town. However when Edward tells him Dodge is the end of the line for him as he has no money or transport Matt puts him up at the jailhouse for the night and feeds him. Matt later secures him a scullery job for which Edward is eternally grateful. Meanwhile Matt still has the problem of Reese Carter in jail awaiting trial and his mean brother Brad Carter threatening to break him out and kill the marshal.
