The episode is a hilarious send-up of the Alexandre Dumas novel The Count of Monte Cristo. Jack Benny plays Edmond Dantes, a down-on-his-luck vaudeville performer wrongly imprisoned for stealing a box of Jell-O. He escapes from the Alcatraz-like "Isle of Gelatin" and becomes the wealthy Count of Monte Jell-O, vowing revenge on his enemies, which in this case include his vaudeville rival Don Ameche and his stingy landlord, Rochester.
