Takes on the French Fleet (13)
Broadcast: 17th October 1952

Hornblower receives a signal from Captain Frederick Cook that there are four French ships astern to her. Mr Bush thought four to two would be a fight worth having but it was not Hornblower’s task to fight against heavy odds unless he was sure that the situation demanded it, other British ships might be in pursuit and rushing in to battle without thought might be as bad as rushing out of it.
