14th July 1789 is significant in French history for the storming of the Bastille prison in Paris and CBS takes you there. The citizens of Paris are angry and restless after years of indignity, hardship and the struggle for a voice in their own government. King Louis 16th called a national assembly at their side to write a new constitution. The hopes of the people for recognition of their rights were raised high only to be shattered when the king suddenly without warning drew 30,000 troops around Paris mostly foreign mercenary and threatened to suspend the national assembly by force. The people have settled before the Bastille the only remaining royal garrison in the city.
