In 1871, Henry Morton Stanley, an American journalist and explorer, traveled to Africa in search of David Livingstone, a Scottish missionary and explorer who had been missing for several years. He found the missing man at a remote outpost in the village of Ujiji, on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, emaciated and sick. Henry Stanley helped David Livingstone to get back to the coast, where he could receive medical treatment. He died a few months later, but his work had been instrumental in opening up Africa to European exploration.
