It was nearly midnight when Sheriff John Barfitt rode to his Fiddleback ranch with two prisoners in tow. John knew that the sound of their horses had awakened his son, because a moment later, the back door of the ranch opened, and the boy called out to his father. The two prisoners were part of a gang of four who had been robbing the Spencer stage line, but the other two had managed to get away.
