By using the Secret Squadron's system of signals, Captain Midnight made his presence known to Chuck and Joyce just in time to avoid walking into a Japanese patrol. Then, the party turned south and crossed a high ridge carrying Joyce on a crude stretcher because of her bad ankle. Soon the little band came to a water hole and found themselves on the edge of a native village. To their amazement, they heard distant voices singing and realised that what they were close to, was a native mission.
