The Lone Ranger and Tonto had ridden hard to reach San Pedro - the main community in San Pedro County. It was after dark when they drew rein in the shelter of trees a hundred yards behind the Sheriff's office. They left their horses at ground hitch, and moved on foot toward the lighted building. The Lone Ranger's trusted friend, the Padre, had told them that Jim Fulsom's gang was controlling San Pedro, and the Lone Ranger wanted to see what Sheriff Dawson had to say about that kind of talk - and whether he himself, was party to this corruption.
