Mike Dennis stopped for a moment just inside the cafe and studied the faces of the men turned in his direction, noticing that their eyes were concentrated on the Marshal's badge he wore. He recognized no-one and breathed more easily. Then as the men turned back to their drinks, he strolled up to the bartender who was waiting expectantly, and welcomed him warmly. The Sheriff of Sagebrush had been dry-gulched the night before, and so the business owners of the little town were feeling uneasy. The bartender was clear that they were plenty pleased to see a new lawman in town so soon - although Mike was supposed to be just passing through. Outside the cafe, Mike hesitated as he was unhitching his horse. He was tempted to mount and ride straight out of town, but the chestnut was tired so he rode only to the livery stable, and walked back up the street to Ma Wilson's boarding house, who was also pleased to see him, and had lots of information for him too...
