A generation ago, millions of newspaper readers throughout the nation would start the day with Damon Runyon. Then one day he startled the world with the announcement that he would no longer write his column on a regular basis, because, as he put it "the man has not yet been born who has something worthwhile to say every day of his life." How true. Why don't more writers follow his splendid example?
