Mr Field had stumbled on evidence that a terrible crime has been committed. A little over a month ago he attended one of the sales of unclaimed baggage that the express company holds twice a year. Whilst there, he purchased a box which contained amongst items of clothing, ten phonograph records. As he played them he realised that they were the words of the victim, a young and beautiful woman but he knew not where the murder had been committed or when and hoped that Nick Carter could solve it.
