Looking back over his voyages Hornblower concludes that this one was the most miserable and distressing. His ship, Lydia, was seriously undermanned, he was suffering from seasickness, which always attacked him at the beginning of a voyage, his mind was torn between anxieties for his wife Maria who would be having their baby before his return, misery at the marriage of Lady Barbara Wellesley and now he was saddled with the care of six merchant ships.
