There was something between the two little boys that Frieda just didn’t understand. Toby, her Toby was gentle with a ready smile and an engaging honesty. Gerald was different. Gerald of course was the son of the house and Toby was only the housekeeper’s little boy. Was that the difference or was there something inevitably evil about Gerald? They were playing together on the dining room floor paying no attention to Frieda as she vacuumed the rug in the hall, but they never played together for long without something happening.
