Prince Charles Edward Stuart, also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, was the grandson of King James II of England, who was deposed in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. In 1745, Charles launched an attempt to regain the British throne for his family. His forces, known as the Jacobites, won a series of early victories, but they were ultimately defeated at the Battle of Culloden in 1746.

After the Battle of Culloden, Charles fled to the Highlands, where he was pursued by government forces. He disguised himself as a woman and traveled with a small group of supporters. On June 20, 1746, he crossed the River Dee near Ballater, with the Redcoats close behind. He was able to escape by swimming across the river, while his pursuers were forced to wade through the shallows.

Charles's escape from the Redcoats is one of the most famous episodes in Jacobite history. It is a testament to his courage and determination, and it helped to keep the Jacobite cause alive for many years to come.

After his escape, Charles traveled to France, where he lived in exile for the rest of his life. He never gave up hope of regaining the British throne, but he never again attempted to invade Britain.
