Tonto dismounted at the foot of the hill and left his horse at ground pitch beside the powerful white stallion named Silver. Silently, the Indian went up the hill on foot. The green slope was studded with grave markers, and Tonto passed the final resting places of many people who had died in the nearby town of Shady Bend on the approach to his friend the Lone Ranger, who knelt beside the newest grave. The masked man's head was bare, his white hat lay on the grass at his side, and he spoke as if to a friend, making a promise.
