Mike Axford and Ed Lowry, reporters at the Daily Sentinel, had dropped in at the nightclub and were seated at the bar. The owner of the bar was one of the most powerful racketeers in the city, but there was never any way the cops could prove anything - the man always had an alibi, and reportedly never carried a gun.
