A curious and expectant crowd had gathered at the small, new depot in Silverton. The gleaming tracks leading off eastward and disappearing around the curve a short distance away, caught and held the attention of all, as they waited and watched for the first sight of the train. A short time later, Luke and Jim Melbourne sat in the office of the James Melbourne Freight and Stage Company. Jim hadn't been worried about the railroad, as he'd had assurances from other - the Mason Mining Company in particular - that he wouldn't lose their business. But now old man Mason had come to the office to tell them he was thinking of closing a deal with the railroad company instead.
