Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy star in the same roles they did in the 1935 MGM musical romance film.

The king of France and the King of Spain have arranged the marriage of young French Countess Marie to Don Cavass whom she considers old and ugly and certainly has no love for him. Her uncle is taking her to Spain next week for the marriage. However her poor maid Marietta is due to depart on a ship to New Orleans as a Casket Girl. Women are needed in Louisiana and the king has given each of the girls who go there a casket of gold and a grant of free land. In exchange for the kings generosity the girls have pledge to accept husbands there in Louisiana. Marie persuades Marietta to swap places and identity with her so that she may escape an arranged loveless marriage.
