Young Ken isn't doing very well at school and his mother things he should be given a Colt as he needs to succeed at something. However Ken doesn't pick a colt from his father's ranch but a young filly. He knows that he will be able to tame her and names her Flicka which is Swedish for little girl. He knew from the day he first spotted the young horse over a year ago that  one day she would be his friend. Soon after Flicka is caught in barb wire and seriously injured. This story shows the love and understanding between Ken and the horse as he nurses her back to health.
