Marmaduke Gillingwater was a kindly man. His love for humanity in general was as much a part of his generous nature, as the slightly bulbous nose, lantern jaw, and bristling eyebrows with which he faced an uncertain world. In fact, Mr Gillingwater's love and kindliness embraced all people and all things - with one exception. Work. His aversion to that subject was so deep-rooted, it had become a lifelong crusade.
