In Paris, 1832, François Vidocq is an ex-criminal and stool pigeon, now employed by the Paris Police. He is bored with his honest livelihood, and although the Police admit his genius for detective work, they are not sure of his loyalty. Vidocq persists in asking for more exciting work, as crime alone thrills him, and brings out the genius within him, but his requests fall on deaf ears...
