In Mayor Elizabeth's first skirmish with the town aldermen, the men were so incensed with her proposed rules and regulations that they all resigned. Thereupon, Elizabeth immediately appointed women aldermen to fill the vacant offices. Since then, other minor city officials have handed in their resignations, only to have their offices filled with permanent appointees.
