Tonight’s story, Light Ship is based on a novel by Archie Binns. Before the perfection of the radio beacon the Light Ships, which guard our many miles of coastline were equipped with an underwater bell, which worked simultaneously with the foghorn in bad weather to warn passing ships of the dangerous reefs and serve as a navigational aid. It was aboard one of these ships that our story takes place when a seaman’s length of service depended not only ones efficiency but on his ability to survive the monotony of the long uninterrupted months of duty aboard the tiny steel island of the Light Ship. They were heading for a bad storm when one of the crew went overboard.
