Freddie gets a letter from his childhood sweetheart Bettina, the girl he didn't marry, as his current wife Claire describes her. Claire explains to their friend Felix that when he asks Freddie why he didn't marry Bettina that men never marry the ones they should, they marry the women they shouldn't like her.
