The character 'Dietrich Nickerbocker' (the author Washington Irving's pseudonym) narrates this most famous and eerie of tales that sowed the seed of so many other ghost stories that would grow from, for there is little doubt that this is perhaps the 'original' modern American ghost story.
Set in 1790 in the countryside around the Dutch settlement of Tarry Town and follows the ambitions of schoolmaster Ichabod Crane who finds himself doing battle with the ghost of a Hessian trooper who had his head shot away by a stray cannonball!
