It was shortly after daybreak when the Lone Ranger and Tonto reined up at the side of the trail near the town of Porter's Gap. The sky was overcast, and the ground was damp with a mist that hung low over the plain. The masked man and his Indian companion watched an approaching horseman, the Sheriff, whose ranch was nearby. They asked him for work, and he directed them to his ranch a couple of miles along the trail. At no time did he mention the Lone Ranger's mask, which confirmed to him and Tonto, the rumor that the Sheriff is losing his eyesight...
