The people of Possum Bend were becoming increasingly fearful, as big, blustering Rocky Miles gained power and influence. Two lawmen who had opposed Miles and his henchmen had died quite suddenly and unexpectedly. There was evidence to point to murder, but nothing could be proved. Sheriff Bates was investigating these deaths when he too was killed. There was no doubt about the fact that Sheriff Bates had been murdered, and the bullet which killed him had entered his back. Three days after the funeral, Rocky Miles and two of his pals entered the office of the stage coach line, wanting to talk to the widow of Sheriff Bates. She wants law to return to Possum Bend - but Rocky Miles wants to get himself elected as Sheriff...
