For several moments after opening his eyes, Sergeant Preston lay quietly and tried to remember where he was. Judging from the crude unfinished walls and the bare surroundings, he was in a miner or trapper's cabin. Turning his head slightly, he saw a man seated at a table, evidently dealing himself a game of Solitaire. The man's back was towards him. A sudden impulse made the Sergeant raise one hand and feel his jaw. To his surprise, it was covered in a stiff growth of beard!
