The episode opens with Jack Benny telling his guest, the story of how he met his longtime valet and sidekick, Rochester. Jack was on a train from New York to Hollywood, smuggling his dog, Don, and his cat, Dennis, in his berth. The porter, Rochester, discovers the animals and threatens to tell the conductor. Jack tries to bribe Rochester, but he refuses. Eventually, Jack agrees to let Rochester be his valet if he keeps quiet about the animals. Rochester agrees, and the two of them become lifelong friends.
