Barrie Craig receives a call from Mark Reid asking him to come by the midnight train to his house, “The Old Tower House” in Dawning and he sounded very urgent. On the train he meets a nervous lady carrying a gun, as it appears that a man had been trying to kill her. It also turns out she too is on her way to Dawning to see Mark Reid, her uncle. When they arrive in Dawning the taxi driver appears to be very reluctant to take them to the old tower house.
