The story of Lydia Winter falls naturally into two pars, separated by exactly one year, almost to the minute. Her marriage to Elliott Larkin ended on New Year's Eve somewhere around midnight at a place called Silver Lake Lodge. The beginning is another story, a personal one which began just a year before, when Lydia's Uncle, a wealthy old man with a keen understanding of human nature, refused to give his blessing of her plans to marry Elliott.
