In 1866 the five civilised tribes signed treaties with the government. Scarcely had this momentous event been celebrated than both United States citizens and certain members of congress began to clamour that some of the lands of the Indian territory be open to white settlement. In that same year 1866 there arrived in Washington representatives of the five civilised tribes to lay before the great white father their bill of wrongs.
