Amos Bugsby was not a handsome man by a long chalk and his ugliness had caused him to be lonely. That is why he replied to an ad in the newspaper from a young widow who required correspondence from a middle-aged gentleman who lived in the country. Eventually Ellen Cutler asked him to visit her home and with a certain misgiving he decided to visit her. Ellen was pleased to see him and introduced him to her brother, Bob who appeared to be concerned for the welfare of his sister. But Amos explained he was a wealthy man and had more than enough money to take care of Ellen. But things went wrong for Amos very soon after they were married.
