The story begins in South Africa up in the Transvaal a good many miles from Cape Town and the sea is Johannesburg. The city is an odd combination of the modern and the frontier where native and Boer and British mingle. There in the district, which looked more than a little like the towns of our own west in the days of the bad men was Keepers Bar. This was a rendezvous for certain gentlemen of roughish exterior but decidedly slick and sophisticated ideas on the subject of making a living. One of these gentlemen was Ollie Carstairs. To him at his table came one known only as Runner a fellow diamond smuggler.
