Deerslayer and Judith Hutter, have left their house in the middle of the lake to find the two canoes which were lost in the night. They have found one which drifted close to the shore, but in rescuing it, Deerslayer has his first encounter with the enemy, and is forced to shoot an adversary in self defence.
