This story begins with Mrs. Richards who has a debilitating heart condition, and a visit with her doctor. The doctor advises that if she avoids stress and follows his instructions, her life could extend a year, maybe two. He scolds her for becoming a recluse, remaining in her darkened bedroom month after month, and never allowing visitors. She insists she wants no pity from anyone for her condition, and wishes to be remembered the way she was. She tells the doctor she is expecting two visitors that day for lunch, her former husband's niece and nephew. The reason for this visit is Mrs. Richards believes it's time to draw up her will and wishes to get to know them because she hasn't seen them since they were children. So this visit is really to determine if Mrs. Richards thinks they're worthy of the Richards fortune.
