The four friends Betty Graham, Gertrude Chase, Dora Mason and Phil were playing tennis in the park that afternoon. After a few sets at about 6.30 they set off home but just as they got to the park gate Dora discovered she had left her racquet at the court and so went back for it. After about 10 minutes Gertrude said she would go and meet her and that was the last that Betty and Phil saw of them.
