Craig Norton is a reader for a literary agency paid for reading stories by successful writers and it galled him because it constantly reminded him of his own miserable failure as an author. If he were alone he could admit defeat but there is his wife Edith who he loved more than life itself. She has shared his failure with patience and understanding, which has gnawed at his pride. Then fate intervened in his life, a trivial unimportant thing that was to shape his destiny.
