Nathan Straus and his wife became concerned with how unclean, unpasteurized milk fed to infants was the chief cause of tuberculosis, typhid, scarlet fever, diphtheria and other diseases. In 1892 they funded a laboratory to prove this, and provide pasteurized milk to children, and subsequently saved millions of lives.
